The Education Welfare Act (2000) contains a number of statutory provisions to ensure school attendance.  Under Section 18 of the Act parents must notify the school in writing of the reason for a child’s absence.  Under Section 24 of the Act, principals are obliged to notify the Education Welfare Officer of any absences exceeding 20 days in the school year (September to June).
